Support For Safety Scheme

CARL SARGEANT AM URGES RESIDENTS TO HAVE FREE HOME FIRE CHECKS
Carl Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, has urged homeowners to take advantage of the North Wales Fire and Rescue Service’s Free Home Fire Check, after recent fires caused by chip pans in the constituency. The scheme, which runs until at least the end of May, includes a home safety assessment and can offer homeowners smoke alarms and the chance to exchange their old chip pans with a thermostatically controlled deep fat fryer, which prevents it from reaching a critical temperature when a fire could break out. Mr Sargeant said: “I have been advised that scheme is currently under review and I will be contacting North Wales Fire and Rescue Service to urge them to keep the offers available for as long as possible.”“In the meantime I strongly urge all residents to take advantage of the scheme. It is important that all households have working fire alarms to warn residents of a fire before it is too late.””To arrange a free home fire check call 01352 792820 or visit the website at

AM Welcomes New Rules

CARL SARGEANT AM WELCOMES NEW RIGHTS FOR RESTAURANT WORKERS
Carl Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, has welcomed new rules which will make it illegal to use customers' tips to make up the minimum wage in Alyn and Deeside.
The Government today announced that from October this year, any tips left for staff will be in addition to basic pay.
Current rules mean restaurant and pub owners can use tips to make up the minimum wage.
Mr Sargeant said: “Hardworking staff in our restaurants and pubs deserve to be given tips on top of their basic wage.
“It is not fair on waiters and waitresses that certain establishments penalise them for their good service. They should be rewarded.
“Customers who leave a tip wish to give workers a bonus for their service and expect it be in addition to basic pay.
"This is another step towards Labour's vision of a fair future for all, where people receive fair pay for their hard work."

CARL SARGEANT AM WELCOMES NEW NATIONAL NURSES UNIFORM
Carl Sargeant, AM for Alyn and Deeside, is welcoming the introduction of new all-Wales uniforms for NHS nurses – designed so that patients can easily see who is in charge of hospital wards. The recommendation for the new national uniform was proposed by a group established by the Assembly Government and included representatives from the Royal College of Nursing, UNISON and the Royal College of Midwives. Wales is the first UK country to suggest introducing a national uniform for nurses.
More uniforms will be provided, and hospitals are working to identify on-site laundry and changing facilities in a bid to prevent and control healthcare associated infections.
Mr Sargeant said: “The new uniforms will allow all staff, patients and visitors to simply identify who has what role and responsibilities. It will be immediately clear who is in charge.
“I am particularly keen on having more uniforms and on-site laundry and changing facilities in order to prevent and reduce the spread of healthcare associated infections. More uniforms will be available so that staff can change if their uniforms get dirty during the course of their shift. Furthermore, uniforms need to be regularly replaced, and by having a consistent design and buying in bulk we can make things more cost effective.”
The uniforms for Healthcare Support Workers to hospital wards sisters/ charges nurses will be phased in across Wales from October 2009.
