CARL SARGEANT WELCOMES MOVES TO IMPROVE SCHOOL TRAVEL SAFETY
The ‘three for two seating’ rule on school buses could be ended under a proposed Measure, or Assembly law, from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government.
The Safety on Learner Transport Measure was put before Assembly Members this week and subsequently welcomed by local Assembly Member Carl Sargeant .
If passed, it would allow the Assembly Government to introduce regulations to make the transport used to take pupils to and from school safer.
Future Regulations that may be introduced could require:
• That all vehicles used for learner transport are fitted with seatbelts. This would ensure that every child has a seat, effectively ending the three for two seating concession.
• The use of single deck buses.
• That supervisors are provided on learner transport used by primary school pupils.
Carl Sargeant, Assembly Member for Alyn & Deeside said in welcoming the proposed Measure,
“The safety of our children when being transported to School is paramount, I welcome any proposals that further ensure the future safety of local schoolchildren.”
The Assembly Government aims to progress the proposed Measure through the legislative process in time to be made before the Assembly Election next May.
