Support For Prince's Trust Cymru Business Programme

CARL SARGEANT WELCOMES NEW SUPPORT FOR YOUNG SELF-EMPLOYED
Alyn & Deeside AM, Carl Sargeant has welcomed the announcement by the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government that the Prince’s Trust Cymru Business Programme will receive a £1.3million boost to help budding entrepreneurs across Wales get started, Geared towards unemployed 18-30 year olds, the funding will enable 2,000 young people to develop key business skills such as marketing, business planning and budgeting. Over five years, 600 young people will go on to set up in business. Those who decide that self employment is not for them will be supported into work, education or training. Through the Prince’s Trust Cymru Business Programme young people will have the opportunity to “Explore Enterprise” over four days. Those with viable ideas can receive test marketing support of up to £250. The young entrepreneurs can then prepare a business plan in conjunction with a Prince’s Trust Business Executive. They will also be matched with a volunteer mentor who will help them ensure the sustainability of the business over two years. In addition to the £1.3m support from the European Social Fund through the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government, the project is also backed with £2m of private donations. This means that The Prince’s Trust Cymru is also able to offer some participants a low interest loan of up to £3,000 to get their business off the ground.Carl Sargeant Alyn & Deeside AM said,“The Princes Trust Cymru does sterling work locally and provides fantastic opportunities for young people to improve their individual skills; I welcome this announcement to provide even greater opportunities that will enable the Princes Trust to continue the good work.”
The Prince’s Trust Team programme also delivers a 12-week personal development course that offers vulnerable young people the chance to expand their skill base, gain confidence, take part in community projects and get back into employment
The Deeside Team programme, which took place last year, enjoyed teamwork training through a residential trip to Treetop Adventure Snowdonia, where the team were able to take part in a ‘gorge walk’. They also raised £190 to fund a community project by bag packing in a supermarket, and used the money to renovate a local Primary School’s eco-garden for the children.
FREE PRESCRIPTIONS HELPING TO IMPROVE HEALTH IN WALES
Carl Sargeant Local Welsh Assembly Member has welcomed a new report into how free prescriptions are benefiting patients in Wales. The report has been published by the Welsh Assembly Government’s Health Minister. Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said;
“The report shows that, despite opposition from the Tories who say that they would scrap the policy, Welsh Labour’s landmark policy of providing free prescriptions for all is helping to improve people’s health in Alyn & Deeside.”
This report also aims to dispel some unfounded accusations, including familiar and out of touch Tory claims that it is subsidising millionaires and that it is a ‘freebie’.
The report details how: • the policy has increased equity and access for hundreds of thousands of patients who were not previously entitled to free prescriptions, such as patients with asthma, heart disease or an organ transplant; • free prescriptions are enabling thousands of people to live more independent lives and reducing the cost of unnecessary emergency admissions to hospital; • the policy is helping to lift people out of poverty and into employment; • the policy has had no unusual effect on the amount of prescriptions dispensed – the annual increase before and after free prescriptions was introduced has fluctuated between just under 4 and 6 per cent. For example, in 2009, the number of prescriptions dispensed was 67.6 million – a 3.9 per cent increase on the previous year. There were some bigger year-on-year increases before the policy came into effect – between 2003 and 2004 there was a 5.8 per cent rise. • there is no evidence that free prescriptions have resulted in an increase of over-the-counter medicines being prescribed to better-off people taking advantage of the exemption of charges; • the policy is not significantly increasing costs – the cost of prescriptions dispensed in 2009 increased by less than one per cent from the previous year with bigger year-on-year increases seen prior to 2007. • patients with heart disease who were previously ineligible for free prescriptions make up the largest group in terms of items dispensed – with almost a third of the prescriptions issued in 2009 – helping to keep people out of hospital and reducing the cost to the NHS. Free prescriptions were introduced by the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government as a long-term investment in improving health. Carl Sargeant AM added“If people are put off seeking appropriate care, due to financial reasons, their health will not improve and the policy tackles the previous situation in which some people on benefits were deterred from taking up jobs because they may have lost access to free prescriptions. Free prescriptions therefore remove the barrier to work and better health.”

AM Welcomes News

Carl Sargeant local AM for Alyn & Deeside has welcomed news that the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government is allocating £4 million to help even more pensioners across Wales with their council tax billsThe move involves a doubling of the amount given to the scheme. It follows the success of last year’s scheme from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government, which gave help to over 32,000 Welsh pensioners. It is expected that thousands more pensioners are set to benefit from the initiative during the next financial year, thanks to the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government’s decision to double the amount it allocates to the scheme.As in last year’s scheme, each of Wales’ 22 local authorities will receive a proportion of the funds so that they can deliver a scheme of assistance that is best suited to local circumstances. Pensioners are advised to contact their local authority to find out if they are eligible for council tax help.Carl Sargeant Welsh Assembly Member for Alyn & Deeside said;“It is a priority of the Welsh Assembly Government to give more assistance to our pensioners and I am delighted with the latest positive commitment, I would urge all eligible pensioners in Alyn & Deeside to make sure they can benefit from this additional assistance.”In addition to the amount allocated, each authority will receive £5,000 to help cover the administration costs of their schemes. The formula for distributing the £4m fund is based on the older person’s distribution statistics as used in the Standard Spending Assessment.
