Carl Sargeant local Welsh Assembly Member and Connahs Quay Councillor, Aaron Shotton dropped in to see the brand new Rowlands Pharmacy at the Red Hall Shopping Precinct in Connahs Quay.
The local Chemist disappeared five years ago and many local residents had been calling for the area to once again be served by a pharmacy.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“ The brand new Pharmacy is a valued and much needed development, I am certain that local residents are very pleased to have a local chemist back in the community after a 5 year absence.”
The reopening of the Chemist at the Red Hall Shopping Precinct brings to a successful end a five year campaign led by local Councillors. Carl Sargeant was in attendance with Cllr Aaron Shotton to celebrate the successful campaign.
SAVE THE DEESIDE BONFIRE DISPLAY
PLEADS CARL SARGEANT AM
Concerns are growing that the annual Deeside Bonfire Display is to be cancelled this year.
The Display which is in its 42nd year has been put under threat this month by the County Council who have informed the Deeside Fire Service that they will be unable to provide the Deeside Leisure Centre Site for the planned 2010 Bonfire Display, due to planned repair works to the 5-a-side pitches.
Carl Sargeant, Local AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“For over forty years Deeside families have attended the display at the Leisure Centre as it is the best and safest way to enjoy the occasion locally.
“In previous years, about 1,000 people across the UK have gone to hospital with a firework-related injury, with half of the victims being under the age of 18. I am fearful that without a local organised display then injuries locally could increase; I would urge the County Council to ensure that the display does continue in Deeside.”
CARL SARGEANT CONGRATULATES GCSE STUDENTS
Alyn & Deeside Welsh Assembly Member, Carl Sargeant has congratulated local students today on another excellent year for GCSE results.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“My congratulations go to all GCSE and Welsh Baccalaureate students for producing another improving set of results in the local area. I also pay tribute to all our teachers, parents and governors for their hard work in helping learners reach their full potential.
“Whether continuing with further education or entering the workplace the choices that students collecting their results today make will help secure a prosperous and successful future for themselves, the local area and also for Wales.”
“The growing success of the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification at these levels, together with the outstanding Advanced level successes announced with A-levels last week, show that the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification continues to establish itself as the qualification of choice for learners aged 14-19 in Wales.”
GCSE results for students in Wales published today show that compared to 2009:
• the overall pass rate increased by 0.2 of a percentage point to 98.7%;
• the proportion of passes at grades A* to C increased by 0.9 of a percentage point this year to 66.4%; and,
• the proportion of A* and A grades increased by 0.3 of a percentage point to 19.2%.
This summer sees the first awards of the Welsh Baccalaureate, Intermediate and Foundation Diplomas since the roll-out of the qualification at these levels across the 14-19 age range began in September 2009.
Apprentices are exempt from paying council tax, reminds Carl Sargeant AM
As young people across Alyn & Deeside have today received their A levels today, Local Welsh Assembly Member Carl Sargeant, is reminding people that apprentices as well as students may be entitled to council tax exemption.
Apprenticeships enable a young person to earn whilst they learn. They offer progressive development that usually leads to good jobs, but can also naturally lead on to Higher Education, perhaps still on a part-time basis whilst working.
Apprenticeships are very popular across all sectors of the economy, with some exciting new options now being developed and tested, such as 'Live Events and Promotion', through the 'Creative and Cultural Skills' Sector Skills Council, and in Housing through the ' Asset Skills' Sector Skills Council.
Carl Sargeant, Labour AM for Alyn & Deeside said:
“Local young people receiving their A level results today will be considering their next moves. That it is why it is important to let people know that apprentices as well as students can claim council tax relief.”
“Money can be the cause of much concern for apprentices who have a limited income. It is therefore extremely important to help ease the financial burden upon apprentices by removing the need for them to pay council tax.”
CARL SARGEANT WELCOMES £4 MILLION FOR WELSH LANGUAGE TRAINING
A £4 million funding package to train early years Welsh medium teachers has been welcomed by Welsh Labour’s Alyn & Deeside AM Carl Sargeant.
The new money, which will support the roll out of the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government’s pioneering Foundation Phase, will run until March 2013 and builds on the £6 million already invested in Welsh Language training for the early years since 2008.
Training will be delivered through Cam Wrth Gam, which operates under the umbrella of Mudiad Ysgolion Meithrin and Geiriau Bach, part of Trinity University College.
Cam wrth Gam provides a comprehensive national support infrastructure for Welsh-medium early years’ practitioners, which is built around a work-based learning model. Geiriau Bach focuses on improving the Welsh language skills of early year’s practitioners. The qualifications and skills gained are key to taking forward the Assembly Government’s Iaith Pawb agenda and securing qualified staff with the bilingual skills to meet the requirements of the Foundation Phase.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“The Foundation Phase is a ground-breaking new approach to learning for children aged three to seven. It is based on the principle that children learn better through first hand practical experiences, play and active involvement rather than by completing exercises in books, I welcome the additional funding and I am certain that this will benefit the educational experience of local schoolchildren.”
CARL SARGEANT CONGRATULATES A-LEVEL STUDENTS
Alyn & Deeside Welsh Assembly Member, Carl Sargeant has congratulated local students today on another excellent year for A-level and Welsh Baccalaureate results.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“My congratulations go to all A-level students for producing another fantastic set of A-level results in the local area. I also pay tribute to all our teachers, parents and governors for their hard work in helping learners reach their full potential.
I am particularly pleased this year to see the Welsh Baccalaureate Qualification across Wales going from strength to strength. We have many exceptional students within our local Schools and College’s. I wish them every success for the future.”
CARL SARGEANT LENDS HIS SUPPORT TO EWLOE GREEN RESIDENTS
Local Assembly Member Carl Sargeant has lent his support to the Ewloe Green action group and has written to Flintshire County Council to provide formal objections to the proposed five space residential gipsy site at Magazine Lane in Ewloe.
The Welsh Assembly Member has been contacted by local residents to enlist his help in supporting their campaign against the planning application.
Carl Sargeant has formally objected to the planning application on the grounds of unsuitability of the land for residential use, due to the site being in the open countryside.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said,
“I am supportive of the views of local Ewloe Green residents who rightly feel that Open Countryside and Green space in the area should be protected.”
CARL SARGEANT URGES RESIDENTS NOT TO MISS OUT ON COUNCIL TAX HELP FOR THE OVER 60’S
Alyn & Deeside Welsh Assembly Member is urging local pensioners not to miss out on available help with their Council tax bills.
The Welsh Assembly Government has made funding available to local authorities for the purposes of helping pensioners with their current Council Tax bill.
A similar scheme last year saw at total of over 32,000 pensioners throughout Wales receive help with their bill. Thousands more pensioners are set to benefit from the initiative during this financial year, as the Assembly Government has doubled the amount it allocates to the scheme, making £4 million available.
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said.
“Supporting pensioners through council tax relief is a key Welsh Assembly commitment, I hope that all local residents over the age of 60 that are eligible for assistance will access the scheme.”
Pensioners are advised to contact Flintshire County Council to find out if they are eligible for council tax help.
