CARL SARGEANT WELCOMES MOVES TO IMPROVE SCHOOL TRAVEL SAFETY
The ‘three for two seating’ rule on school buses could be ended under a proposed Measure, or Assembly law, from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government.
The Safety on Learner Transport Measure was put before Assembly Members this week and subsequently welcomed by local Assembly Member Carl Sargeant .
If passed, it would allow the Assembly Government to introduce regulations to make the transport used to take pupils to and from school safer.
Future Regulations that may be introduced could require:
• That all vehicles used for learner transport are fitted with seatbelts. This would ensure that every child has a seat, effectively ending the three for two seating concession.
• The use of single deck buses.
• That supervisors are provided on learner transport used by primary school pupils.
Carl Sargeant, Assembly Member for Alyn & Deeside said in welcoming the proposed Measure,
“The safety of our children when being transported to School is paramount, I welcome any proposals that further ensure the future safety of local schoolchildren.”
The Assembly Government aims to progress the proposed Measure through the legislative process in time to be made before the Assembly Election next May.
CARL SARGEANT DELIGHTED WITH £3.4 MILLION BOOST FOR CREDIT UNIONS IN WALES
Welsh Labour’s Alyn & Deeside AM Carl Sargeant has welcomed the Welsh Assembly commitment of £3.4 million to support the continued growth and sustainability of credit unions in Wales.
The funding, which includes £1.8million from the European Regional Development Fund, will ensure that credit unions continue to develop financial services that are available to all Welsh citizens during the next three years.
Following the announcement Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said;
“Credit unions offer an alternative safe and reliable way of saving and borrowing money, especially for people on lower incomes, I believe that they will have vital role to play within our communities over the coming years.”
Since 2000, credit unions in Wales have seen a five fold increase in members and assets. There are now over 43,000 members and 8,000 junior savers across Wales and assets rose from £4million to £21million during the decade.
Call for a Local History Museum
Carl Sargeant Local Welsh Assembly Member is supporting the call made by Connah's Quay Councillor, Aaron Shotton for a Local Heritage Museum to be created in Connah’s Quay.
A heritage museum similar to those found in Ironbridge, Shropshire, would celebrate the industrial heritage of the local area and ensure that it is protected for future generations.
Carl Sargeant AM and Cllr Aaron Shotton are calling on Flintshire Council to utilise Welsh Assembly CyMAL grants, lottery funding and local businesses such as Corus to ensure that a museum can be created. Empty Council owned buildings at the Wepre Drive Civic Centre have been suggested by Carl Sargeant as the perfect opportunity to make the idea a reality.
Cllr Aaron Shotton, Connah’s Quay Central Ward Councillor said
“Connah’s Quay and surrounding areas are rich in heritage and history, from shipbuilding to steelmaking and it is important that this history is preserved for future generations, the old health clinic in Wepre Drive are a part of the same building that houses the newly refurbished library so this would be the ideal place to create a museum of local history.”
Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside said
“A museum displaying the proud history of the local area is long overdue, Steelmaking and shipbuilding are a part of our heritage, something we can be proud of, and it’s important we don’t forget. We need to do this now because if we leave it any longer the memories will be lost forever.”
CARL SARGEANT RAISES CONCERNS
OVER HGV TRAFFIC IN HAWARDEN
Alyn & Deeside’s Welsh Assembly Member, Carl Sargeant, is calling for action to be taken to reduce the increasing number of HGV’S travelling through the historic village of Hawarden.
Carl Sargeant recently conducted a survey of Hawarden residents and the vast majority of resident’s named HGV traffic as a growing problem and a terrible blight on the historic village.
The Alyn & Deeside AM has written to Flintshire County Council calling for immediate action to be taken to ease the traffic nightmare for local residents.
Carl Sargeant, local AM for Alyn & Deeside said
“The residents of Hawarden should not have to suffer the daily problem of HGV’s using the Village as a short cut, local resident’s have cited the regular occurrence of HGV’s using Gladstone Way and Crosstree Lane as one of many common shortcut’s and it is clear to anybody that these residential routes are not appropriate for heavy traffic, I am urging the County Council to address the issue.”
CARL SARGEANT WARNS OF
DOG FOULING HEALTH RISK
Alyn & Deeside’s Welsh Assembly Member, Carl Sargeant, has warned of the dangers of dog fouling following the news of a toddler in the North West of England who could lose one of her eyes after getting an infection from dog mess in a park playground.
The child who was playing in a gated children’s area, was diagnosed with a potentially deadly infection that could spread to her brain.
Hospital tests confirmed toxocariasis, an infection which is spread by dog dirt. It can result in optical lobe cellulosis, which can lead to blindness and even death if not treated within 72 hours.
Carl Sargeant AM attended Buckley Higher Common to highlight the risks associated with dog fouling,
Carl Sargeant AM said
“As a dog owner myself I know lots of people who do pick up after their dog, however it is important to remind people of the health risks particularly for young children to ensure that more people clean up after their dog’s, I’d like to hear from dog-owners to see if there’s anything deterring them from clearing it up, is it a lack of bins, or just habit and what could be done to encourage them to do it.”
Local Council’s often come in for criticism over the issue of tackling dog fouling but Carl Sargeant recognises that the local Council has recently introduced dog fouling enforcement and is now calling for an awareness campaign about the dangers of dog fouling.
