AM Welcomes Funding

EXTRA £10 MILLION TO RELIEVE LOCAL AUTHORITY PRESSURES
Carl Sargeant has welcomed news that Councils across Wales are set to receive an extra £10 million of funding from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government to relieve pressures on children’s social services and maintain community facilities such as sports centres and family centres.
To further the Assembly Government’s Social Justice objectives, the Welsh Assembly is distributing around £4.5 million in capital funding and around £5.5 million more in revenue funding.
Carl Sargeant said,
“This will help local authorities to maintain their spending programmes for the next financial year. By using this money to fund spending programmes that are already in progress, they can then free up resources for future year spends.”
The additional money will be funded from underspend on other programmes and will be allocated to individual local authorities, Flintshire County Council will receive an extra £219,800 in capital funding and a further £195,237 in additional revenue funding for next year.

SCHOOL NURSES GO BACK TO SCHOOL

The Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government’s commitment to ensure that every secondary school in Wales has a school nurse is expected to be achieved at the end of this Assembly, Welsh Labour’s Health Minister Edwina Hart has announced today.
The Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government had committed to a school nurse for each of Wales’s 223 secondary schools, and the final three remaining posts are expected to be filled during April 2011.
The nurses’ role is to help address the health, emotional and social needs of children and young people and promote healthy behaviour and well-being. It will address the needs of all pupils regardless of their school attendance and will include services outside school hours and during school holidays where required.
Alyn & Deeside AM Carl Sargeant said,
“The school nurse scheme is a positive development for the health and wellbeing of our schoolchildren. I am certain that our local children will benefit from this initiative.”
The Assembly Government has provided additional funding to local Health Boards to enable them to employ specialist community public health school nurses (SCPHN) and registered nurses. The Health Boards will sustain the newly-created posts into the future.

AM Welcomes Funding

£2 MILLION TO HELP OLDER PEOPLE OUT OF HOSPITAL MORE
QUICKLY

Alyn & Deeside AM Carl Sargeant has welcomed today’s news that a scheme that carries out minor but vital adaptations to older people’s homes to allow them to be discharged from hospital more quickly has been awarded £2.094 million of funding from the Labour-led Welsh Assembly Government for the next financial year.
The Rapid Response Adaptations Programme (RRAP) allows equipment such as ramps, handrails, safety alarms and door entry systems to be fitted in people’s homes quickly so that their hospital discharges are not delayed and future admissions can be avoided. The scheme is administered and monitored by Care and Repair Cymru and delivered by Care and Repair agencies.
Alyn & Deeside AM, Carl Sargeant said;
“It is critically important that we ensure our older people can gain the reassurance and independence that simple home adaptions can bring, I am delighted that this important budget has been protected this year.”
The funding has been maintained at the same level as last year, despite cuts to the overall housing budget, because this investment results in big savings in other budget areas such as the NHS and Social Services by preventing admission to hospital as a result of accidents in the home or illness due to unsuitable living conditions. Care and Repair estimate that every pound spent on RRAP saves £7.50 for health and social care budgets by preventing hospital admission or speeding up hospital discharge. Nearly 16,000 RRAP jobs were completed in 2008 - 2009, of which over 10,000 prevented hospital admission and nearly 5,000 enabled hospital discharge.
