AM Welcomes Funding

CARL SARGEANT WELCOMES FUNDING BOOST TO HELP OLDER PEOPLE IN ALYN & DEESIDE REMAIN AT HOME

Carl Sargeant AM for Alyn & Deeside has welcomed an announcement from the Welsh Labour Government to help older people remain in their homes.
The Care & Repair movement in Wales is to receive new funding of £1.5 million for Independent Living Grants to help older people in Wales remain safe and well in their own homes, Welsh Labour’s Housing Minister, Huw Lewis, has announced.
The £1.5million will be distributed to the twenty-two Care & Repair agencies in Wales and will be spent on home adaptations such as stair lifts and walk in showers. The objective of this grant is to help address ‘waiting lists’ for adaptations, to maximise independence and to help relieve pressures on hospital acute admissions and to help speed up hospital discharge.
Alyn & Deeside Labour AM Carl Sargeant said:
“Older people in Alyn & Deeside and across Wales want to remain in their homes for as long as possible.
“By providing help with small changes around the home Welsh Labour is helping older people remain in their own homes and easing the pressure on the NHS.
“I would encourage older people here in Alyn & Deeside, who think they may benefit from this funding to call Care & Repair on 0300 111 3333.”
Huw Lewis AM, Labour’s Minister for Housing, Regeneration and Heritage, added:
“Small changes can make a huge difference and that is especially true in the case of the Care and Repair service. Minor home adaptations can help a person remain in their home and live independently with the dignity they deserve.

“The service also helps ease pressures on health and residential care, preventing unnecessary stays in hospital or care homes.
“I am delighted that Welsh Government funds are being used to help make such a difference to people’s lives in Alyn & Deeside.”

Remember Armed Forces Day

CARL SARGEANT BACKS ARMED FORCES DAY
AND URGES LOCAL COUNCIL’S TO DO THE SAME

Carl Sargeant AM has called on local communities, organisations and businesses across Flintshire to help celebrate Armed Forces Day this Saturday.
The national event is to show support for the men and women who make up the Armed Forces community: from currently serving troops to service families and from veterans to cadets.
The Welsh Labour Government has pledged to extend eligibility for the concessionary travel scheme and to extend the priority status that Service personnel and veterans have in the Homebuy scheme to the widows and widowers of personnel killed in Service.
In addition, over the next term, the Welsh Labour Government intends to extend free swimming schemes to veterans and serving military personnel on leave, formalise the support arrangements for Welsh Armed Forces Day parades across Wales as well as assess any additional support that is required for the families of serving personnel.
To mark the occasion Carl Sargeant will be attending the national event in Cardiff
Alyn & Deeside Labour AM Carl Sargeant who is also the Minister with responsibility for the Armed Forces in Wales, said:
“Armed Forces Day is an important opportunity to formally thank our service men and women.
“All our armed forces members who have made great sacrifice to defend the UK and contributed to international peace keeping operations deserve to be recognised. The nation owes them all a debt of gratitude.”
“I am also urging the County Council to ensure that it raises the Armed Forces Day commemorative flag over all its civic buildings across our County.”
